American woman at risk of arrest for locking her Covid-positive son in car trunk: reports

Houston:

Teacher in the US state of Texas faces arrest and child endangering charge after locking her 13-year-old COVID-positive son in the trunk of his car for fear of contracting the disease, according to media reports Saturday.

On January 3, Sarah Beam, 41, was investigating the possibility of having her child tested for COVID-19 during a drive-thru test in Harris County, when she told an official her son was locked in his car trunk, the Houston Chronicle newspaper reported. .

The official – identified as Director of Health Services Bevin Gordon – told Beam his son should be removed from the safe before he is tested for COVID -19.

Beam refused and left the scene, after which Gordon alerted local police.

Gordon’s account was verified by CCTV footage and even Beam opening the trunk of the car to show his son was captured.

An arrest warrant was issued by Harris County District Court on Wednesday.

Beam teaches English at the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, northwest of Houston. She was put on administrative leave.

KXAN News reported that Beam took her son for further testing.
