Ashling Murphy: Man detained in connection with murder of elementary school teacher who jogged in the afternoon | World news

A man arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a young woman in Ireland while out for an afternoon jog is to be re-examined.

The woman has been appointed locally as an elementary school teacher Ashling Murphy, of Tullamore, County Offaly.

She died after being attacked while running along the canal bank in Cappincur at around 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Superintendent Eamonn Curley said during a press briefing: “At this point there is no information that the victim and his killer knew each other.

“Based on our investigations, we believe this crime was committed by a man who acted alone.”

He said a 40-year-old man has been arrested and is being held at Tullamore Garda train station, and officers are keeping an “open mind” in the investigation.

The incident shocked the country, prompting comments from local councilors and government ministers.

Declan Harvey, Fianna Fail’s advisor for the region, described Tullamore as “possibly the safest place in the world”.

“After yesterday people will be nervous about going down to the canal,” he said.

“It’s a lovely area and helps clear your head. It’s a very popular route that everyone takes. People walk their dogs, people walk with their children and strollers.”

Justice Minister Helen McEntee tweeted: “My thoughts tonight are with the family of the young woman killed in a truly shocking crime, her friends and her community.”

Gardai is appealing for information and is asking anyone who was in the Cappincur / Tullamore Canal walk area before 4 p.m. Wednesday to contact her.
