How many teams will make the NFL playoffs in 2022?

There will be seven teams that reach the NFL playoffs in each conference, meaning a total of 14 teams will end the 2021 regular season with a chance to win a Super Bowl.

The NFL’s playoff tiebreakers

The NFL has a long system for deciding how each team will advance to the playoffs in order to avoid a possible tie-breaker game for one of the spots. They have slightly different tiebreaker formats for deciding who goes ahead between division heads and wild card places.

Here’s how the NFL will break a divisional lead tie between two teams. The same tiebreaker applies to three or more teams, the only difference being that in stage three, there must be a minimum of four common matches. If only two teams remain tied after the third stage, or if another is eliminated, the tiebreaker reverts to the first stage.

  1. Head-to-head (best percentage of wins and losses tied in matches between clubs).
  2. Best percentage of wins and losses tied in games played within the division.
  3. Best win-lose-tie percentage in common games.
  4. Best percentage of wins and losses tied in games played within the conference.

Here’s how it would work out for three different teams tied for a wild card spot.

  1. Apply the division tiebreaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked clubs in each division before proceeding to step 2. The initial ranking within a division when applying the division tiebreaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two wild-card participants.
