Marilyn Bergman, award-winning lyricist, died at 93

Marilyn Bergman, known for her song lyrics, has died aged 93, Fox News Digital can confirm.

The Grammy-winning and Oscar-winning lyricist died at 1:15 a.m. PT at her home on Saturday, with her husband Alan Bergman and daughter Julie by her side. The cause of death was respiratory failure.

Bergman’s death was unrelated to COVID-19.

Bergman is survived by her husband, daughter and son-in-law Julie Bergman and iLan Azoulai as well as her granddaughter, Emily Sender.

The lyricist has been highly decorated in terms of awards, receiving three Oscars, four Emmy Awards, three Grammy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and more throughout his career.

The Bergmans, who married in 1958, were among the most enduring, successful and productive songwriting partnerships, specializing in introspective ballads for film, television and the stage that combined the romance of Tin Pan Alley with the polish of contemporary pop.

They have worked with some of the world’s best melodists including Marvin Hamlisch, Cy Coleman and Michel Legrand, and have been covered by some of the world’s greatest singers, from Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand to Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson.

Both won Oscars for the songs “The Windmills of Your Mind”, “The Way We Were” and for the score by Yentl. The Bergmans have been nominated 16 times in total.

Bergman spoke to the Huffington Post about writing songs in 2013.

“If someone really wants to write original songs, that really speak to people, you have to feel like you’ve created something that wasn’t there before – which is the ultimate accomplishment, right? not?” Bergman said at the point of sale. “And to do something that wasn’t there before, you have to know what came before you.”
