Netflix and Apple top SAG Award nominations with “Squid Game” and “Ted Lasso”

It’s another good year for streaming for SAG Award nominations, but who and what has been chosen is decidedly different this year. Netflix was always the favorite with one or more applications in almost all categories, including several choices for The power of the dog (three) and Squid game (four) as well as individual nods for productions like Do not seek, Who passed and Halston. However, Apple has also performed particularly well this year – Ted lasso received five nominations, while The morning show has accumulated four. Coda and the not quite out Macbeth’s tragedy also burnished the image of Apple.

Other services were also due. Amazon has had success with titles like Being the Ricardos and The tender bar, while the Disney Empire made its presence felt with nominations for The Handmaid’s Tale and the Disney + series like Loki and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Netflix has also broken a cultural boundary – Squid game is the first non-English-speaking series to receive a SAG nomination, not to mention the first Korean series. That’s not entirely surprising given Netflix’s eagerness to produce global blockbusters, but it’s remarkable given how difficult it has been for overseas versions to land these awards.

Material first for theater and television still has a significant presence in SAG nominations. Still, it’s evident that the partial return to normal in entertainment has had only a limited effect – streaming shows are still thriving in today’s rewards landscape.
