Ricky Gervais rings on ‘signaling virtue’ ahead of Golden Globes

Ricky Gervais, the comedian known for his annual Golden Globes celebrity knockout, said in an interview released Friday that he has sensed a shift in public attitudes towards Hollywood glitz over the past decade.

“The first time I did it, 10 years ago, everyone was like, ‘Ah, how can you talk to these wonderful multimillionaires, how can you talk to these beautiful people, like that? love celebrities, ”he told The Sun newspaper in an exclusive interview. “The last one was like, ‘God give it to them, we hate celebrities.'”

In a controversial year, Hollywood’s self-proclaimed largest party has been reduced to little more than a Twitter thread.

Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” has won several major awards, for Best Comedy or Musical, Best Actress for Rachel Zegler and Best Supporting Actor for Ariana DeBose.

Gervais was famous for his irreverent approach to awarding the awards. Last year he referred to former financier Jeffrey Epstein. The crowd moaned and he said, “Shut up. I know he’s your friend.”

He told the UK newspaper he thought his approach was taken by the public because so many viewers at home are struggling and they think, ‘Why are these people teaching me? They go to an awards show in a limo and tell me to recycle. “

He said people were fed up with “virtue signaling” and celebrities “were like a beacon to point their anger on.”

“You have to make a decision as a comedian,” he told the newspaper. “Are you flattering the 200 most privileged people in the world in the room or the 200 million watching at home?”
