Scott pilgrim looks set for a comeback, and not just in video games. Hollywood journalist at learned Universal’s Netflix and UCP (the unit behind The Umbrella Academy) develop a Scott pilgrim animated series. It’s unclear how close this will come to the original graphic novels, but creator Bryan Lee O’Malley and 2010 director Edgar Wright will be the executive producers.
O’Malley will serve as showrunner alongside Are you scared of the dark? revivor BenDavid Grabinski. Science SARU is leading the project.
It won’t be shocking if the series sticks to the main plot: Scott, the frontman of the Sex Bob-omb group, wants to win Ramona Flowers, but can’t date her until he defeats. his seven evil exes. The graphic novels and the film were both nods to manga, indie rock, video games and Canadian culture at the turn of the millennium.
This is a slightly unusual twist on a familiar phrase. While Netflix hasn’t shied away from its ambitious anime plans, it has generally focused on originals or adaptations of Japanese games and manga. Here, the streaming service adapts a comic that was a Western tribute – and one that many may only know on the big screen. Netflix’s strategy is unclear, but it could see it as a way to expose its catalog of anime to a wider audience.
