Steve Harvey says crop cancellation made him stop stand-up: “Political correctness killed comedy”

Steve Harvey has spoken of canceling the crop, blaming him for his decision to move away from stand-up comedy in recent years.

The comedian has focused much more on his work as a TV host in recent years, such as directing “Family Feud” and his new ABC show in which he presides as a judge in low-stake cases, ”Judge Steve Harvey “. Speaking on the Television Critics Association press tour to promote the new day courtroom series, Harvey explained that he was afraid to return to the stage standing for fear of facing criticism ending his career.

“The only way I can do another special is if it’s at the end of my TV career because it will end my TV career,” Harvey said (via Variety). “We’re in the culture of cancellation now. No sponsor-led stand-up can say everything they want. Chris Rock can’t. Kevin Hart can’t. Cedric the Entertainer can’t. DL Hughley can’t. I can go down the list. The only person who can say what she wants to say on stage is Dave Chappelle because he’s not motivated by sponsors. He’s subscription based. “

Harvey was referring to the recent controversy surrounding Dave Chappelle over his Netflix special “The Closer”. The comedian continues to face overwhelming backlash after spending the last third of his sixth special with the streamer discussing his grievances with the transgender community and the criticism he faced after talking about it on his fifth special, “Sticks & Stones”. Despite the controversy that is hitting Netflix hard, the company has announced that it will take part in the company’s new 11-day comedy festival titled “Netflix Is A Joke: The Festival” in Los Angeles.

Steve Harvey noted that he believes doing a stand-up special in the age of cancellation culture would be too risky with all he has to lose. He concluded his thoughts on the issue by lamenting the impact he thinks “political correctness” has had on the world of comedy.

“If I had tried to continue on stand-up, I wouldn’t have any way to keep it going,” said Harvey. “Political correctness killed comedy. Every joke you tell now hurts someone’s feelings. But what people don’t understand about comedians is that a joke has to be about something. It has to be about something. about someone. We can’t write jokes about puppies all the time. The joke can’t be on the bushes all the time. Some of these jokes will have to be about people, because that’s the topic. more interesting. So if I come back I’ll have to wait until I’m done. And I haven’t finished. I want to do one more. I’m probably going to have to call it ‘That’s it . ‘”
