The ultimate showdown: Will Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano fight in 2022?

One of boxing’s greatest fights is in the final stages of approval. ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reported that Amanda Serano and Katie Taylor are finalizing contracts to fight on April 30 and will be held at Madison Square Garden.

A clash between the two wouldn’t be at the Hulu Theater. At stake would be Taylor’s WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO lightweight titles. Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn told the DAZN Boxing Show that “we’re now on the brink” of the matchup happening. He also praised Jake Paul, who partnered with Serrano, for helping bring this fight closer to the finish line.

“Jake Paul did a brilliant job for her [Amanda Serrano]. He massively increased the value of Amanda Serrano,” Hearn said, via DAZN. “She deserves it, the price that was offered three years ago is no longer the price. As they say, the price of yesterday is not the price of today and Jake Paul is one of the main reasons.” Women’s boxing doesn’t get bigger than this fight. I mean, in a way, I want to stop saying ‘this is the biggest fight in women’s boxing’. It’s one of the greatest boxing fights.

boxing scene also reported that two more women’s title fights are set to be booked on this card.

This fight would be the second time the two have attempted to fight. Serrano and Taylor were scheduled to face off in 2020. The pandemic altered those plans, in addition to a rebooking due to Serrano filming a Telemundo show. Hearn threatened legal action due to the conflicting timing of the two events. There was also a debate regarding what the fight pay would be.

Taylor, 35, made her professional debut in 2016. Olympic gold medalist in 2012, Taylor won the WBA lightweight title in 2017. She went on to beat Victoria Bustos in 2018 for the IBF title, Rose Volate for the WBO title and Delfine Person. 2019 for the WBC and The Ring titles. Taylor has won three fights in 2021. Her last fight was a unanimous decision win over Firuza Sharipova in December.

Serrano is a seven-division world champion, having held gold in the super featherweight, junior featherweight, featherweight, lightweight, bantamweight, light welterweight and junior bantamweight divisions. After losing the only fight of his career in 2012, Serrano is on a 28-fight winning streak. Her last fight was in December, a unanimous decision victory over Miriam Gutierrez, a former opponent of Taylor.

Teaming up with Jake Paul and Most Valuable Promotions, Serrano has appeared on almost every card Paul has run. Now Taylor and Serrano will be looking to take the lead and the main event at one of the most famous venues in sports history.
